Torsion Springs are located above door mounted on a torsion tube.

Most torsion spring system are either one to two springs. Each torsion spring have a life-cycle according to the length, diameter, and coil size of the torsion spring. Once the torsion spring breaks, the counterbalance system that lifts the door will no longer function and your garage door with be extemely heavy to lift. Often, a garage door opener will struggle to lift the door and only move a few inches if at all. Don't attempt to lift the garage door with the garage door opener with a broken garage door spring, the garage door and/or garage door opener may be damaged. We recommend replacing both torsion springs on a two spring system as the have they same usage and the life will be limited. Extension springs are usually on single car garage door up to 10' wide. The extension springs are located above the horizontal tracks and extend as the garage door closes.
